Winnie Langley, of South London, celebrated her 100th birthday by lighting her 170,000th cigarette on the candle of her birthday cake.
She sparked her first heater at the ripe old age of 7, a few weeks after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked the first World War. She has smoked five a day, everyday since.
Says Grandma Ironlungs, “I have smoked ever since infant school and I have never thought about quitting. There were not all the health warnings like there are today when I started. It was the done thing.”
But here’s the rub. Before we let Grandma Ironlungs start preaching the safeness of cigarettes to the kids on the playground, we should mention this one minor detail. She says she has never had smoke related health problems because she “never inhaled.”
We all knew girls like Grandma Winnie in highschool, cigarettes in their hand just to look cool. While I always labeled those who “fake” smoked posers, none of those hussies had the staying power to do it with 170,000 cigs over a 93 year period, so I’ll give Winnie, not just a pass, but a “tip of the cap,” due to her perseverance and commitment.

am i the only that sees something stupid about lighting up 170000 times and not inhaling? she could save herself a trip to the corner store and just “smoke” the money itself? she might actually save cash in the process.
