It has come to our attention that the music source for many in the bit torrent community, Oink!, has been discovered by the authorities and shut down. We don’t openly back stealing music via the intraweb. Openly. What we do back is a site where you can freely sample music by artists you’re unfamiliar with to better determine whether or not it is worth your time to drag your happy ass down the local mom and pop record store, like say Best Buy, and purchase the band’s albums. The nice thing about sites such as Oink! is that they are (or perhaps were) private and heavily moderated, so those heady brahs who are sharing the music must show all the details of how the music file came to be in the format that it is (i.e. source, bit rate, etc)…unlike the older P2P sites like Limewire or Kazaa, where the file may be called Phish: The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday, but is actually be a virus infected 30 second clip of Hillary Duff’s latest attempt to convince 14 year-olds that she has some sort of talent.

Alas, the suits at the top of the recording industry’s food chain do not agree with the ’sampling the goods’ technique. Because, as we all know, without the $15 to $20 we spend on albums, the record company executives would not be able to make the mortgage payments on their 17 year-old daughter’s beach side house in Malibu…and then where is she supposed to live? In some run down condo owned as an investment property by an accountant in Phoenix who can’t afford the upkeep and argues with her every time she calls him about the leaky faucet? I don’t think so, you thieving bastards. And if you think she’s going to give up her 7 series BMW so you useless, yerk-toting, frisbee-chucking cheeba-monkeys can all share one purchased copy of Dick’s Picks Volume 12, then you’ve got another thing coming.
