We don’t do a lot of Sunday blahging, but I thought I would throw a quick movie suggestion out there for you.
The other day I saw the new Phillip Seymour Hoffman vehicle Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. Along with Mr. Hoffman (a brahsome.com favorite) was Ethan Hawke and the always beautiful Marisa Tomei…and believe you me, you see plenty of Ms. Tomei. Wink, Wink. Hint, hint. Nudge, nudge. Boobies.
The basic premise is this. Hawke and Hoffman are brothers who are both in need of a quick cash injection. Hawke has an ex-wife bustin’ balls about child support payments and Hoffman is having trouble keeping his wife (Tomei) happy while maintaining other personal habits. Hoffman comes up with a fairly simple plan and convinces his brother to help. Things don’t exactly go as expected.
As shit begins to hit the fan and the plan unravels, both Hawke and Hoffman fully embrace the ‘desperate times call for desperate measures’ mantra and the lives of everyone involved veer way off course.
It’s a sad, dark movie and has an ending that is anything but ‘Hollywood,’ but Hoffman is white hot right now, so it was a little surprising that this movie hasn’t been garnering much attention by the mainstream media. Hawke and Tomei turn in fantastic performances as do most of the other supporting members of the cast (most notably Albert Finney as Charles).
Hoffman has become one of those actors who can straddle that difficult line of being bankable by the big studios for high dollar blockbusters (MI 3), yet still maintain that indie cool street cred. This film obviously leans towards the latter. It’s a great, unpredictable story with an ending that kind of stays with you for a while after you walk out of theater.
3.5/5
“May you have food and raiment, a soft pillow for your head; may you be 40 years in heaven, before the devil knows you’re dead.”
