Black Mountain’s sophomore release In the Future comes out on Tuesday (Jan 22, 08).
Some parts Black Sabbath, some parts Velvet Underground with a little bit of Led Zeppelin for good measure, the sound coming from this quintet of Canadian hippies feels more like 1975 than it does 2007…which is funny considering the album’s title.
In the Future comes out the gates hot with Stormy High and pretty much continues to rage all the way through with heavy guitar riffs, trippy synthesizer work, and sometimes eery vocals. Tyrants and Bright Lights are the heavyweights (the latter being over 16 minutes long, which might be pushing it a little bit), while Angels and Stay Free show off McBean’s perhaps overlooked ability for writing leaner, more mainstream (I was going to use “poppish” but that has a negative connotation with me for some reason) songs. Their ability to bounce between the heavy jams and, at times, ambient, stoner-friendly melodies make the album a lot of fun to listen to.
Heady, heavy metal…what’s not to like?
