Morning Wood: Officially Baseball Season

by Stamos on April 8, 2008

March Madness is over, and with it, the hopes of fans of all college basketball teams but one. However, with one end is a new beginning- in this case, baseball season. It’s not difficult to make the argument that football season is the best, as fans tend to be the most passionate on Saturdays and Sundays. And college basketball is amazing. But in some ways, the MLB season is better than any other. For starters, when you’re looking for a way to waste the last several hours of a worthless work day, where else can you turn? There’s not much better than being bored off your ass at the office and then realizing you’ve got a starter on your fantasy team going in the 2pm game. Find your way over to CBSSportline and get the gametracker going, and the afternoon wastes itself away. Jump down for some fearless predictions from Stamos on this year’s baseball season.

1. Tigers win 100 games. Look, this didn’t seem fearless two weeks ago, but after dropping their first 6 games, the mighty Tigers look very pedestrian. Don’t worry. Once the weather warms up, they’ll be scoring 6 a night, and Verlander will be chasing the Cy Young.

2. Mets win the east by double digit games. This may seem like a copout too, but let’s not forget the Braves have won that division 14 of the last 15 years (or close to it- I’m too lazy to research) and they have a good young core. The Mets have already seen Pedro go down, and will be lucky to get 20 starts from him. But the heart of their order is as good as anyone’s, and they’ll threaten 100 wins en route to a division title.

3. Cubs won’t make the playoffs. Look, ARam, DLee, Soriano, Zambrano- they’ve got horses. And I’ve seen analysts picking them to win the World Series. Not me- the curse lives on, and Sweet Lou is fighting for his job at season’s end.

4. No one on the Reds staff throws over 200 IP. Dusty loves to destroy young arms, and there’s plenty of them in the Cincy organization (Edison Volquez, Johnny Cueto, Homer Bailey) but I think he might have learned a lesson in Chi-town and will try to preservethe future for the Redlegs. Harang has thrown 230+ the last two years, and I think he’ll find his way to the DL at some point this year.

5. Yankees win the AL. Again, some folks will say this is a copout, but in the AL, you’ve got Boston, ChiSox, Tigers, Angels- AL is stacked. But the Yanks have a good balance of great veterans (ARod, Jeter, Abreu) and future stars (Cano, Hughes, Kennedy) and will want to show they can win under Girardi as much as they did under Torre.

MLB gives me a hard-on. My favorite sport..yes over football and basketball.

Mets will not make the playoffs. They don’t have the bats that Philly and Atlanta do and they don’t have much pitching either, especially the bullpen. They are geriatric and overrated. Also, they have ZERO chemisty. Johan and Maine will be really really good I think and Wright and Reyes are bonafide studs. That is it though. Omar Minaya worst GM ever next to Brian Sabean.

Also, not sure on Yanks either. I would go Blue Jays over them and possibly over Boston this year.
