Jay-Z Covers Oasis — Wait, What?

by Brinson on July 1, 2008

Yeah, that’s right. Jigga busts into England and opens up with some “Wonderwall” shit before ripping off “99 Problems” (you know, the song that’s kind of okay, but if it had come out when you were in high school you would f’ing love it because calling girls “bitches” was so damn cool?). (UPDATE: Some f—ing wanker has pulled the video. So, here’s a quote from Idolator re: why Jay-Z was doing this. Hint: It’s not because he likes Oasis.)

After months of buildup, Jay-Z played his much-discussed headlining set at the Glastonbury Festival last night, and he opened it with a special dedication to Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, who had said that Jay was an inappropriate addition to the Glasto bill because it was “built on a tradition of guitar music.” Jay strolled out with a guitar, strumming and warbling along to “Wonderwall,” last-call-on-a-long-night-style, before breaking into “99 Problems.” I think this is a way to tell Gallagher “your move,” although I shudder to think what an Oasis cover of “Big Pimpin’” might sound like. (There’s a download of his full set from last night here.)

As “cool” as Noel and Liam are, I get the feeling Jay-Z knows more people that could whip their ass than vice-versa. It would be quite the scrum, though no? Tally.

Jigga v. Noel/Liam would probably be the shortest, wackest rivalry in the history of music.
