Well…it’s about that time. USA Today has released their pre-season college football poll. Let the expectations sore and discussions begin.
The Georgia Bulldogs are on top, USC comes it at #2 and the jerkstores from Columbus, Ohio are in the three spot. OSU is the only Big 10 team in the top 10, but that won’t stop everyone in the heartland from claiming the Big 10 is the best conference.
My Horns debut right where they left off at #10, which is higher than I expected. There are 5 Big XII teams in the top 14 and we play 4 of them, three of which are on the road. We have a home game against bitter rival Arkansas, a game that sounded a lot sexier when it was scheduled a few years back before we knew this would be a re-building year in Fayetteville.
Not surprisingly, the top of the poll is a little SEC heavy. In case you hadn’t heard, the SEC has a lot of speed. I’m not sure that’s been mentioned. Very fast, those boys down there…very fast.
The only ACC team in the Top 10 is Clemson, which makes me smile. Not necessarily because I’m a Clemson fan, but because they seem to have just enough talent every year to get people excited and make some noise early, only to faulter later on…much like their basketball team. For some reason I have an affinity for the Tigers, so I’d like to see them get over that hump this year…but can they with Bowden on the sideline?
No Miami, No Florida State, and the Gators at #5. What’s going on down there? I think Shannon can turn things around in Coral Gabels, and while ol’ Bobby Bowden is getting on in years, he’s just three years removed from a BCS bowl. I feel like FSU is just one quarterback who isn’t a joke away from being relevant again.
Fresno State looks to be the little guy that everyone will be pulling for to do well enough to make it to a BCS bowl. Boise State proved that sometimes the little guys belong, Hawaii proved that most of the time they do not. Did I mention Boise State beat Oklahoma?
