Not Your Father’s Bowling Alley

by The Piler on December 8, 2008

If you have ever lived in the Raleigh area or attended NC State University you are probably familar with Western Lanes Bowling Alley.  The bowling alley has been a mainstay on Hillsborough Street for over half a century.  It is the home of NC State’s most popular P.E. class and Theresa Fenner, the “beer lady” who, by her count, has flung over 160,000 beers down the bar to patrons during her years at the alley.  Despite it’s charm and unbeatable location with parking on Hillsborough Street, the Alley has seen business decline considerably over the years.  That’s all about to change as some friends of Brahsome, Blaine Smith and Jimmy Poole, have taken over management and plan to give the facility a major face-lift.

The first phase will put in electronic scoring.  While scoring by hand is kind of cool, it is usually a pain, especially after Theresa has slid you that first six-pack.  Also in the works are plans to to completely remodel the bar and restaurant area, add a new bar overlooking the lanes, add flat screens all over the place and put in a sound system.  For now, the vintage lanes and bench area will be left in their original shape, giving it a throwback feel.  It’s going to be more than just your average bowling alley- great place to watch games, grab a drink or dinner, and throw a few frames while you’re there.  In addition to the building overhaul, the new management is implementing an aggressive marketing scheme to reach out to the community and more fully tap into the valuable customer base across the street at NC State.  Currently, they are hosting couples nights, with pizza, shoes, and bowling for one low price, with a prize to the high scoring couple.  Stay tuned to Brahsome for future details of the happenings at the Alley and do us a favor, go support our boys.
