If you are a gamer, I shouldn’t have to tell you that the Call of Duty franchise is one of the most respected franchises in video games today. If you are only a sports gamer, think of Call of Duty as the Madden of war games/first person shooters. It is bad ass and highly anticipated before every release (Read as: kids line up outside the store with mommy’s credit card to buy this game).
Setting
Call of Duty: World at War is set in WWII during the final battles in the Pacific and Eastern Europe. You play as a Marine Raider and a Red Army soldier. It follows a chronological history of WWII with famous battles including the Makin Island raid, the Battle of Stalingrad, the Battle of Peleliu, the Battle of Okinawa and the Battle of Berlin.

Campaign Mode
We are pretty big fans of Bauer Hour at Brahsome so I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing the game and, all of a sudden, I had Jack Bauer screaming at me to get over there and get in cover and telling me that I was doing an “outstanding _ _ cking job”. I remember that they came out with a 24 video game so aptly titled 24: The Game. It ranks up there with one of the worst video game that I have ever rented which also is another of my favorite shows, The Shield. 24: The Game just didn’t live up to my standards so it was nice to reunite with Bauer on the battlefields of WWII and shoot a bunch of people.
While working side by side with Jack Bauer, you go through a shitload of missions. It is a pretty long story so you will get your money’s worth solely from the single player mode. The graphics are great and are continuing to get better after each installment of the Call of Duty franchise. The game play is a lot smoother than it was in years past which adds to the realism. Players switching from Modern Warfare will notice a big difference in the weapon selections but you have to realize that you have gone back to 1942 and are no longer in the future so the weapons will not be as advanced. Once you beat the game on any difficulty, you unlock a mode called “Nacht der Untoten” or known in English as…
Nazi Zombies
Nazi Zombies is one of the coolest secret levels that I have ever seen. You start out in a boarded up house with fog drifting bye as ominous music plays in the background. Slowly but surely, you begin to hear moaning that is straight out of one of Romero’s movies. You are only given a pistol, a knife and 500 points to begin with. As the Nazi zombies trying to rip your face off, you must defend yourself by any means necessary. As you kill off the Nazi zombies and repair the boards on the windows so Nazi zombies can’t just crawl straight in, you gain points which allow you to open additional areas and buy some more badass guns like flamethrowers, double-barreled shotguns and Colt .45s. If you get bit, you have to start over. There is no winning in the game. The Nazi zombies never stop coming.
The greatest thing about Nazi zombies is that you can nerd out with a friend on the same console or with up to four people online. This makes it a little easier to survive the waves of Nazi zombies that are coming to eat your liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. Be warned that this is extremely addicting.
Multiplayer
Call of Duty’s multiplayer mode might be the reason that franchise is so successful. World at War offers a plethora of online game options for players to choose from. The classic options are games like Capture the Flag and Free for All while the last two installments have included games like Domination (holding a certain area of the level) and Sabotage (blowing up a central bomb before the other team can). The addictive thing about Call of Duty online is how your player advances through completed different tasks which, when completed, unlock new guns, challenges, skills and a bunch of other stuff.
If you are looking for a way to geek out, try jumping online with the other 200,000+ people that will be playing at the same time as you and be a part of an all-out nerd war. Seriously, your eyes will be burning out of your head from excessive use of the flat-screen or your controller will be dead by the time you finally set it down.
