Larry Coker, the man brought a national championship to Miami with Butch Davis’ players before allowing the program’s wheels to come completely off, has been hired as the new head football coach at the University of Texas-San Antonio.
It was announced last December that the University of Texas Board of Regents had approved the business plan for UTSA, “granting the university permission to expand athletics and add a football program.”
UTSA will begin as a D1-AA team with hopes of moving up to D1-A over time. They will begin recruiting and practicing in 2010, play as an independent in 2011, and then join the Southland Conference in 2012.
It’s kind of a strange hire, in my opinion. It’s nice to get a “name,” but when you’re building a program from scratch, do you really want the architect to be 60 years old? Or, more importantly, a 60 year old whose Miami squads got worse each year he was there? The good news here for UTSA fans is that he can’t make them any worse.

Coker’s already picked out his a-squad faculty and is working on recruits right now. 7 months after this was written the program is coming together very well. For recruitment and schedule updates, check out utsafootball.org
