OU-ch. Louisville Beats OU … Costs Paris $64K

Courtney Paris and OU lost to Louisville, costing Paris her scholarship
I realize that brahsome.com isn’t your one stop shop for women’s basketball news as we don’t really care about women’s sports any more than you do … but today, friends, is different.

Last night as I was winding down I heard on SportsCenter that the Louisville Cardinals had knocked the Oklahoma Sooners out of the women’s NCAA tournament. Normally the news of a Sooner loss would elicit little more than a chuckle or cheers … but this loss is different.

As you might recall, Oklahoma superstar Courtney Paris guaranteed a national championship prior to this year’s tournament, saying anything less would be unacceptable. She put her money where her mouth was, by telling reporters:

“We’re gonna win a national championship. If we don’t, which is not even an option, just to put something on the line – and it might take me the rest of my life – I will pay back my scholarship because I didn’t do what I said I was going to do.”

Granted, Ms. Paris is probably heading towards the WNBA, where she will be able to draw a decent paycheck. It’s not like she’s your every day Sooner, whose degree earns them little more than a hosting position at Shoney’s, so the possibility of paying off that scholly in the next decade are two is actually feasible.

But let’s not kid ourselves.

Paris isn’t destined for an seven-figure signing bonus or huge endorsement deals. In 2008, the maximum WNBA salary was $95,000.00 and the minimum was $34,500. Draft picks 1-4 made about $44,000.

So … yeah. Perhaps OU will let Courtney start some sort of payment plan. Lay-a-way is something everyone in Oklahoma should be familiar with.
