Sammy Sosa has had one of the weirdest career arcs of any professional athlete: he was a tremendously loved slugger for the Cubs, he made runs at home run records, then he got busted with a corked bat, then he was considered a decent prospect for steroids, then he disappeared from the game of baseball, then he came back, then he disappeared again, and now he’s returned with really bleached skin.
And for whatever reason, he’s trying to deny the fact that he just wants to honor the late King of Pop with the bleached skin, having stated (through someone in the Cubs’ organization) that it’s simply a “rejuvenation” process.
“He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin,” [Rebecca] Polihronis told the Chicago Tribune. “Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting.”
Now, that might be true (except the “lighting” part …), and if so, well, I guess good for Sosa — Lord knows you don’t want your skin not to be juvenated. Or, alternately, it could be a by-product of steroids and pretty soon Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco will just disappear entirely. Which doesn’t sound too awful.
