Oliver Stone Has Lost His Goddamn Mind (Finally)

by Brinson on January 10, 2010

Screen shot 2010-01-10 at 1.33.52 AMI’m a big fan of Oliver Stone. After all, he’s done some, um, good stuff. Like ‘Platoon’. And ‘The Doors.’ And ‘JFK’ — okay, I mean, he’s done a lot of good shit. It’s always interesting and conspiratorial and crazy like that. You would anticipate that, eventually, he’d bust out a WW2 movie.

Guess what — he is! (I know, you were surprised based on the previous sentence, weren’t you.) But seriously, he is. Only it’s going to be very, very, VERY poorly received. Or maybe it’ll go huge — assuming that everyone loves Hitler.

“Stalin has a complete other story,” Stone said. “Not to paint him as a hero, but to tell a more factual representation. He fought the German war machine more than any single person. We can’t judge people as only ‘bad’ or ‘good.’ Hitler is an easy scapegoat throughout history and its been used cheaply. He’s the product of a series of actions. It’s cause and effect … People in America don’t know the connection between WWI and WWII … I’ve been able to walk in Stalin’s shoes and Hitler’s shoes to understand their point of view. We’re going to educate our minds and liberalize them and broaden them. We want to move beyond opinions … Go into the funding of the Nazi party. How many American corporations were involved, from GM through IBM. Hitler is just a man who could have easily been assassinated.”

WTF, dude. Even if that sort of craziness is true — and it’s highly unlikely despite the entirely plausible nature of it — why on Earth would you bother trying to mention it?

I mean, it’s one thing to say “Hitler killed Nazis because a robot controlled his brain and that robot was comprised of Freddy Krueger’s hands and Satan’s testicles” or something like that. At least then people wouldn’t take you seriously and wouldn’t be thinking that you might try to debunk a crazy historical myth like “Hitler wasn’t evil.”
