Jose Offerman, a two time MLB All-star, was arrested last night following an on the field altercation which involved him swinging his bat at the opposing pitcher and catcher, hitting the catcher in the head and breaking the finger of the pitcher. Offerman, who currently plays in the Atlantic League for the Long Island Ducks, homered in the 1st inning. Then, in the 3rd inning, opposing pitcher Matt Beech lost control of a cut fastball which hit Offerman in the calf.
Offerman proceeded to charge “the mound with his bat over his head taking swings at Beech. He took at least two, maybe even three [swings],” said Bridgeport Bluefish manager Tommy John (yes, that Tommy John). We found it odd that Offerman would have such a hard time making contact with the victims of his aggression- a .273 career hitter should have better hand / eye coordination than Offerman displayed. That said, he is statistically the worst fielding SS in MLB history, he’s 38, and he’s playing in the Atlantic League for the Long Island Ducks, so it’s not only safe to say his best years at the plate (or charging the mound) are behind him, but that he might be a little sensitive to trash talking. The CEO of the Bluefish, Mary-Jane Foster, has asked the league to suspend Offerman for life. He was released on $10K bond, and will face charges of assault regardless of the Atlantic League’s decision.
We say the league should just feed him to Ugie Urbina and let him handle it. ![]()

i realize this is in the minor leagues, but it’s funny how fights in baseball are handled differently than the NBA. If this was an NBA player who had attacked an opponent with what can be considered a “weapon,” the sports media would have imploded by now.
