Women: The Only Reason to Watch Tennis

by C. Brahkowski on October 24, 2007

Argentinian David Nalbandian won the Madrid Masters last week, beating Roger “I Slay Box” Federer 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In fact, he didn’t just beat the best player in the world…he beat the No. 2 player (Rafael Nadal) and No. 3 player (Novak Djokovic) en route to his Sunday showdown with Federer. Spicy.

But, honestly, we don’t really care. I mean, it happened on Sunday…if we backed men’s tennis that much, we would have posted this on Monday. The reason we’re putting this up here is because we back the Madrid Masters’ decision to spice things up by using models as ball girls.

Great idea.

Brilliant.

They’ve been doing it for years in Madrid (the little minx to the left was on hand in 2005) and the only question is, why the hell the majors haven’t picked up on this?

I back women’s tennis. The running, the sweating, the grunts and screams…all good things. Do I enjoy it when some Johnny Russian does it? Nada so much. So why not give us a little eye candy? If Roddick’s shot goes into the net and there’s a chance a European model is running across the screen in a tight skirt, I probably would spend less time watching old Seinfeld episodes and more time caring about men’s tennis. That’s a lie. I wouldn’t care more about men’s tennis…but I would at least watch more men’s tennis. And in the sports world, where dollars are everything, isn’t that what’s most important? Not that we care, but that we tune in to see the commercials and signs by the tournaments’ sponsors. So I say to you, Willie Wimbledon, come out of the dark ages and give the fans what they want. More scantily clad women.

Wouldn’t this be great way to get Ana Kournikova back on the court? I mean, it’s not like she was all that great anyway…but this way should could stay in touch with the game that she loves. After all, we did say that the Madrid Masters uses models. This way she could sort of cross train. She wouldn’t have to actually lose matches like in the old days, but she could still come out and look incredible in some tight shorts or a skirt and spend some time in front of the crowd. She gets the attention, we get beautiful ladies running and sweating and whatnot. We’re on to something here people. This is just the beginning…
