These Go To Eleven: Music Videos
Jan 9th, 2008 by Stamos
All the brahs were born in the late 70s or early 80s, so we are the MTV generation. Not the Laguna Beach / The Hills MTV, but the music videos all day MTV. The good MTV. Don’t get us wrong- the Real World is still firmly implanted on the DVR under “save until manually erased”, but times are different. So, we put together a list of the best of the best music videos from a time before it was nothing but singing and blinging- when a music video did something other than show off rented cars and women. So, let’s get this show on the road.
Of course, you can always just listen to the Brown Hour and hear the hilarity of the lists and Brahsome’s take on other stuff live. Or not really live. Whatever. Check it out:
Download the MP3 for your IPod, etc to waste time at work here.
Or click here to check out Brahsome’s Now Live page and listen to the shows. You can access these in the player to the right as well.
11. Crazy, Aerosmith (Stamos). Really could have gone with Amazing or Cryin here as well, but this was Alicia Silverstone at her finest. When you toss Liv Tyler in as well as some catholic schoolgirl outfits, this edged Amazing (starring Randy “Pink” Floyd) to make the list.
10. Fell In Love With A Girl, White Stripes (Piler). Only video we’ve ever seen done totally in the medium of Lego.
9. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana (CTYA). Please.
8. She’s Gone, Hall and Oates (Stamos). You could make a solid argument that this is the worst video ever made. But Darryl with tased hair and John with the goatee and half tux is all I need. Watch the volume on this one…
7. Heart Shaped Box, Nirvana (BStone). Nirvana kicks ass.
6. Black or White, Mike Jackson (Piler). Just a pioneer as far as videos go. Debuted during halftime of the Superbowl for Christ sake.
5. California Love, Tupca and Dre (Stamos and BStone). Just a couple of badasses hanging out with Chris Tucker in the future.
4. Smooth Criminal, Mike Jackson (CTYA). Thriller gets the hype, but this is MJ’s best, in CTYA’s opinion.
3. Black Hole Sun, Soundgarden (BStone).
2. Thriller, Mike Jackson (Stamos). Best. Video. Ever. It’s a friggin movie.
1. November Rain, Guns ‘n’ Roses (Piler and CTYA). GNR.

Solid list.
That’s a perfect #1. No way that should ever be changed. I also loved the Crazy, Black Hole Sun, and Heart-Shaped Box.
Just off the top of my head….One from Metallica? Wanted: Dead or Alive?
Not one of my favorites, but what about the Aerosmith/Run DMC Walk This Way rendition?
Oh, good call on Walk this Way. I feel like maybe I was too young to really be watching MTV when it came out in full force, so every time they showed it, it was, like, totally super gnarly. Either that or I was a really dorky kid. Either one is absolutely possible.
Walk This Way was definitely in my honorable mentions.
If I hadnt’ wasted Apache in the Morning Wood yesterday, that would have been my #1 fo sho.

It always pisses me off that nobody ever mentions Green Jello’s “Three Little Pigs” in their lists of best videos. No other video cracked me up like that one did.
Nice list…too bad Rock the Cradle of Love didn’t make it!
Great list! The one recent video I would add is “Hurt” by Johnny Cash. Normally I hate covers but the video speaks for itself.
What a wasted read. Aside from Thriller, I’d be ashamed.
“Freak on a Leash” by Korn. Quite possibly the coolest video ever made, and easily the best one MTV would refuse to play.
Damn- Freak on a Leash was a good one, with that bullet and what not. Good call, Joe.
And thanks for stopping by, JC. Always nice to meet a fan…
Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel.
3LP is a superb, superb, superb call. I would absolutely bump my bottom three for it. Dammit. What a miss by me.
“Take on Me” by a-ha? Lame song, cool video.
“Cry” by Godley and Creme? Beat “Black or White” to the face-morphing punch by several years.
The treadmill one was cool too. And the backwards one.
P. Gabriel…that was in my top five, but got bumped from the final 11…I loved that video.
Look, they’re not as cool as some of the ones mentioned here, but Cradle of Love, Take on Me, Video Killed the Radio Star and (I apologize in advance) Amy Grant’s Every Heartbeat, which might have been the hottest G-rated video ever, should be mentioned someplace. But when I first saw the list existed, I assumed something as profound as November Rain wouldn’t be #1. I was wrong. Nice job…
Despite your apology, please never desecrate GnR in the same breath touting Amy Grant. It’s not doing a lot for your credibility on this site, Brah.
I wonder - was Live’s video for “Freaks” considered? The entire thing is pure art and a headtrip.
This is a great list…you “ONLY” gotta squeeze nine inch nails in there!
Fair enough Piler. I stand chastised. But if a child molester gets three spots and Hall and Oates gets one, isn’t there just a little room for that video (not Amy, just the video)?
‘Breaking the Girl’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers is a very trippy, vastly underrated video.
For shame, no Spike Jonze!
Sabotage, Buddy Holly, Oh So Quiet, Praise You, Da Funk, etc.
Oh so many to choose from.

GET SERIOUS! Sabotage by the Beastie Boys is not on this list. L-A-M-E

3 Michael Jackson, 2 Nirvana and 1 Soundgarden video as best of alltime? Let me guess, you clowns are a bunch of 10 year old boys, from Seattle, who like Ferris Wheels and playing with chimps. Thriller of course belongs but the rest are a joke.
Ferris Wheels + playing with chimps.
Fuck and yes.
Without a doubt Sabotage by Beastie Boys is the greatest video ever made
It’s embarassing that we left Sabotage out, no doubt. But, as a couple of 10 year old boys from Seattle, who like Ferris Wheels and playing with chimps, I think we did a damn fine job.
PS. Izzys-> I love you. Do you love me? Please check one.
Yes ____________ No ____________ Maybe __________
Before I read through the list I was thinking November Rain and Thriller better be there. Those are my favorite two of all time. We must park our cars in the same garage. My other favorite is Heartbreaker by Mariah Carey. If for no other reason than just superficial.
PS - Check YouTube for the Phillipine Prison redition of Thriller.
