Random Bobby Knight Thoughts

by Brinson on February 6, 2008

knight-chair.jpgSweet effing sweater set, Bobby. We stole that one from the Piler, who gchatted us about the lime green/pea-dookie combo that Bob Knight wore in his interview with Jay Bilas. At first we thought, “ugh”, then we realized we don’t care about sweater colors on retired grandpas. Then we saw this GD interview for the 475th time in the past 24 hours and we thought, “Hey, ESPN, shut the fuck up. We get it. He’s retiring. Stop running the interview.” It got so bad that we actually changed the channel to TBS to watch “Just Shoot Me”. Please recall that said show is a sitcom about David Spade working at a fashion magazine.

Yeah, we know. But it got to that point. We just couldn’t sit there and watch General Knight yelling “Happy days are here again!” one more time. But it wasn’t even Knight…it was the whole thing about ESPN grabbing hold of a storyline and pummeling it into the ground. Which is what they do, so we guess we’re over it. Besides, Andy Richter is cameoing in the next episode, so we’re fine with it…No wait. Dammit. Sorry.

What we meant to say was that there’s a cool article in the Indy Star that we totally back. The premise, essentially, is that Indiana University should just grow the fuck up and honor the coach that brought them so much freaking success. And we totally agree. Why is the school still distancing itself from Knight, eight years later, even if he did say when he moved to Texas Tech that this was the “most comfortable” he’d felt in a red sweater in a few years. Yes, he had his share of run-ins with faculty, parents, students and athletes, but the guy won national championships. He coached an undefeated season, the latest and possibly last (oh right, Conference USA isn’t fake, sorry) in the foreseeable NCAA history. And he ran a clean program. So shouldn’t he get something on that cornbred campus named for him??

‘I’d sure like to think that there could be something that could be named for him there,’ said John Laskowski, a top reserve in 1975. ‘Time will tell. Now the question is how many years have to go by before he can be honored the way he should be honored for all the great things he did for the 29 years.’

Exactly. Is it really too much to ask that the school remembers why they were so important as to be brazen enough to ax Knight in the first place? Apparently so.

IU athletic director Rick Greenspan said he has heard the same sentiment from donors and fans since he came to IU in 2004. And although Greenspan said he believes it will would happen someday, he added, ‘I certainly don’t have a timetable for that in my mind.’

Jeebus. Really? Just give the dood a building on campus. Or how about you haul all those maw-effing trophies and nets and awards and shit down off the walls that he won for you and put them in Knight Hall outside the AH.
