Live Blog - UNCG v. Davidson
Feb 13th, 2008 by Brinson
Awww, what the hell. I had not intention of doing this but every other media member on “press row” is doing it, so we’ll run one at Brahsome.
For those of you interested, the Spartans are on a vicious three game losing streak, falling to the Furman Freaking Purple Paladins last week and now get the heavily favored Davidson Wildcats in a capacity crowd here.
Seriously, this place is packed and freaking loud.
And jumping forward a few minutes (16:50) the Wildcats finally get off the board. Place is going nuts, Kyle Hines has two blocks already, and Ben Stywall looks sharp as well. Big test here though as the Spartans coughed up an early lead to Wofford last week and one has to wonder if that’s still lingering.
14:25 - As an NCSU fan, this might be the best basketball I’ve watched in two or three years. Both teams are shaping up offensively. Stephen Curry just got on the board with his first point on a free throw. You kind of have to figure that won’t last.
15:42 - Davidson doesn’t so much as look bad, as the Spartans look absolutely sharp as hell right now. Kevin Oleksiak just ripped a ball baseline and fed one to Hines (he of the 2,000 points, all time Southern Conference leader in blocks, etc) for a pretty narsty facial. 14-4 Spartans
12:16 - Hines drives and draws a foul as the action has cooled a little bit. And by cooled a little bit I mean Davidson is making a quick run. 18-13. Hines goes 1 for 1 from the line, which we’llthey’ll take, given the team’s recent woes. It honestly doesn’t seem in the best interests of the team to fire away at will against the Wildcats.
10:52 - Another pair of Curry freebies takes us to 22-16 Spartans. Big props to Oleksiak (who just hit another three - make it 25-16) and Koivistto who look like they came to play tonight. You know, as opposed to the last week or so. UNCG basketball struggles mercilessly if the outside shooters aren’t hitting their shots. /Madden
9:42 - And the Spartans are rocking an 11 point lead, hitting everything in sight. Plus they’re getting to every loose ball, and not too inconveniently getting all the calls. Curry gets an and one and he might not have missed a free throw in his life. Eva.
8:42 - Curry misses a really deep three and the Spartans are rolling, Hines to Dwayne Johnson in the corner for three (if DJ is getting in on the offense, the team is clicking) and then Hines swats a(nother) shot on the other end.
7:00 - Curry with a sick drive to the hoop, fighting off defenders, but Oleksiak, who’s having a hella good game already, answers right back. 33-21 Spartans.
6:16 - Holy Home Cooking. Ben Stywall just got flat out rejected, pinned against the board even, and the Spartans still got the foul call. One and one. Ball do lie apparently. 34-23 Spartans.
4:35 - It’s awkward how biased the refs are at this point. Seriously. They’re slinging phantom block calls in front of the Davidson bench and gray-hair fanbase, almost spitefully. 41-25 Spartans. Annnd Will Archambault is apparently sick of it, as he cacks on Hines. Too bad Koivisto answers with another three from the corner. Spartans are a ridiculous 99 of 100eight of 10 from beyond the arc at this point. 44-27 Spartans.
2:33 - There’s like a 90 percent chance I’m going to get hit in the face with a loose ball now that I’m using internet coverage at a game. Well worth it though. 49-32 Spartans but the calls and crowd have simmered a little bit. It’s so awkward that they brought Dan Nelms in, who averages 0.4 points per game. Spartans trying for a 20 point lead heading to half.
31 seconds left, now Davidson has the ball 52-34 Spartans.
52-37 Spartans at the half. Hines and Curry each have 18, Curry’s is surprising since he’s one of six from beyond the arc. Kevin Oleksiak gets the game ball for the first half though with 17 points and four for four from beyond the arc. It will be extremely interesting to see if the Spartans can match the intensity of the first half in the next 20 minutes (it’s going to be tough, and I know you’re riveted right now.) UNCG shot nine of 12 from beyond the arc for the first half and 16 of 23 from the floor. Wildcats only three of 14 from the three point line and 12 of 33 from the floor overall. I’m going to go out on a limb and say this doesn’t go the same way in the second half….starting now.
18:30 - Orrr not. Davidson gets a three to bring it back to 15 after Oleksiak drives to the hole. Seriously, let’s get some props for Oleksiak. Curry on the screen role brings it to 56-43. Davidson looks much sharper in the second half but the Spartans aren’t sitting back and taking any punches.
15:17 - Crazy loop-dat-loop shot by Davidson brings it to 60-47 Spartans and with this little mini-run you can tell UNCG needs a timeout, little crowd noise or something. And media timeout. Lucky for them. Now kids will do stupid things with shoes and running. It’s actually kind of funny. One kid is always way better at tying his shoes than the rest.
- Awww. A cheer off. How inspiring.
14:51 - The Spartan fans absolutely never let go of an airball chant. It’s humorous until you realize they’re going to be doing it for the next 30 minutes. And it’s pretty cliche.
13:44 - Curry hits a monster three pointer off another screen (I’m at this pointing out that the Davidson coach should consider pulling a 2006-07 Rip Hamilton and run him off of screens every single play). By the way, it’s totally awkward that my computer lacks one of it’s shift keys. I feel like Will Leitch, minus the part about Robert Traylor. Yes, I’m pimping another blogger’s book in a live blog. Exciting game.
13:19 - Spartans do nothing on offense followed by a Curry steal and lay in. Sh*t is gonna get awkward if UNCG doesn’t start making some shots (Hines misses a free throw - you can almost see this collapse coming. I’m sorry.)
11:40 - Ben Stywall with four huge points in the last two mintues. Curry misses a three but another offensive rebound by the Wildcats. Curry gets it back and buries one from the corner. 65-60 Davidson. Wheels. Coming. Off.
10:23 - 65-62 Spartans. It’s not so much UNCG falling apart as it is Curry just taking this game over. There’s no way there aren’t NBA scouts in the building right now (hey guys!) and he’s sitting on a ridiculous 30 right now. With 10 to go. Curry might score 50. Seriously.
9:02 - Holy sh*t. This is worth it just for the Stephen Curry show. Maybe it’s the red/black uniforms but he’s reminding me of a shorter, skinnier Brandon Roy. 35 now.
8:15 - Kyle Hines with two quick buckets to make it 69-67 Spartans. This is suddenly turning into a superb college basketball game - Curry hits another deuce to make it 71-69 and he’s got 37, but looks tired. Davidson needs a timeout. And word here is the that Curry scored 17 points in six minutes. I mean, suite jeebus.
5:30 - Huge three by Oleksiak puts the Spartans up 74-69 before Curry gets robbed on a little floater in the lane. Full timeout.
3:52 - You can tell both teams are exhausted at this point. 74-73 with three to go in a much lower scoring second half. Spartans ball.
3:00 - Tremendous! effort by Kyle Hines. Yes! And Curry right back. This is like some cliche boxing match I won’t reference. 77-76 Wildcats, until an offensive putback by Hines with 2:15 remaining.
1:45 - Looked like goaltending but a Curry miss gives the Spartnas a 78-77 lead with 1:00 remaining. Spicy to see how they handle this after so many tough losses throughout the season at the end. Annnd they immediately cough the ball up. Which immediately leads to a three point play for the Wildcats. Not so good.
:57 - 80-78 Wildcats. This place is going bananas. B-A… Um, right. Huge possession for the Spartans and a horrible shot by Oleksiak.
:26 - Heeeeeee-yuge miss at the free throw line for the Wildcats. Spartans rebound and they’re facing a similar situation to the one against Wofford last week where the late game offense looked like total crap. Seriously, that’s crass, I know, but it was embarrassing.
:16 - Hines draws the foul and a one and one…he misses the first. Spartans foul with 12 seconds left. Davidson rebounds, one make, second miss, rebound Wildcats, crazy jump ball, DJ takes an ill advised three with about four seconds left and Steven Curry rebounds and makes two free throws. He’s over 40 and the Spartans just coughed up an awkwardly large comeback.
