Who Doesn’t Want Rocket’s Autograph?

Well, besides us. We don’t care to have alleged cheaters sign our stuff. But apparently, we’re the only ones who feel that way, as are abounding that various members of Congress and Congressional staffs have been requesting autographs from the same guy they’re dragging in this morning to testify about his alleged steroid use. Presumably, they do not care about his wife’s alleged steroid use. Normally, too, we’d be pretty skeptical about these supposed autographs that were being requested, but Georgia Congressman Lynn Westmoreland wasn’t exactly denying the rumors in a Q&A shesh he did with the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Q: There are reports that Clemens signed autographs and posed for pictures with some congressmen and staff members. Do you believe that’s appropriate?

A: “I’m not going to tell other members of the House how to run their offices. He’s obviously a huge star. But I was meeting with him as a member of Congress who sits on a committee that can have a significant impact on this man’s life. This wasn’t Fantasy Baseball Camp. For me personally, I didn’t think it was appropriate to ask for a picture or an autograph. Besides, I’m a Braves fan.”

Now that, kids, is freaking priceless. Likely unfortunate for Clemens that he’s on the committee, but priceless nonetheless. Oh yeah, and when asked whether he was “among those that received a picture or an autograph” he didn’t try and backpedal for anyone else, he just said “No.”

There’s lots more good stuff in the interview, including but not limited to Westmoreland using the phrase “better things to do” about Congress intervening in “Spygate” and offering up some vague rationale for not dragging Andy Pettitte in either. Oh yes, and as the Chicago Tribune points out, Clemens might not be the only one getting in trouble on Capitol Hill.
