Morning Wood: Morning Ramble…
Feb 28th, 2008 by C. Brahkowski
Hello hookers and hustlers. Happy Thursday. I’m just happy to be here.
::in my best Bill Walton voice:: It’s been a long, strange week.
As Stamos mentioned, we went to Nawlins last weekend. . .so that automatically meant this week of work was going to blow. I hoped I would be able to ease back into normal life, but when I arrived at work on Monday morning, I realized I wasn’t going to be able to hide behind my cup of tea (I can’t drink coffee, so I start my days with green tea…does that sound geigh? maybe). I’ve been slammed all effin’ week by bullshit at the office. My phone won’t stop ringing. Can a brother get a break?
As bad as life has been from 8-5, I must say the ‘after business hours’ have treated me pretty well.
On Monday night, my Longhorns stepped up (as they often do on Big Monday) and took down a KSU team that was unbeaten at home. While Beasley still got his (just the standy 30 and 15), the Horns improved to 11-2 in conference and went unbeaten in the month of February. Add that to their win over Kansas and then non-conference wins over Tennessee and UCLA, and my boys have put together a nice little tournament resume. It’s hard to believe this might be a better team without Durant. Can we throw Rick Barnes’ hat in the ring for Coach of the Year yet?
Unfortunately for my brahsome brethren, the Wolfpack have not faired as well this season. The loss to Florida State last night dropped them to the bottom of the ACC. On a positive note, their boy David Thompson was named the #8 greatest college basketball player. So the week isn’t a total loss.
On Tuesday night I went out to the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC to see one of my favorite bands, Dean & Britta (two former members of the now defunct and under-appreciated Luna). Just like last year, they played to a small, seated crowd. On the selfish side, I loved the fact that there were seats (since most of the D&B material isn’t really dance music) and a small crowd means shorter beer lines, less background noise, etc…but when you’re seeing one of your favorite bands, it’s kind of nice to be in a packed house so they can play off of the energy…and I’d like them to sell enough tickets to pay for the gas in that big ass bus they had in the parking lot. Granted, at their shows north of the Mason Dixon line they fill up the venues a little faster than down here in the dirty south, but I would still like to see a little better showing by the fans. I mean you have a great singer/songwriter/performer in Dean Wareham (vocals/guitar) and then you have the absolutely gorgeous Britta Phillips (bass). How these kids haven’t garnered more support is still sort of a mystery to your author…but I’m glad I’m on the very spacious bandwagon.
The show was as great as expected. They only covered two Luna songs and one Galaxie 500 song, but there was still plenty of head bobbing jams and beautiful vocals. I was hoping to post a few D&B youtubes to blow your mind and pique your interest, but the quality of the youtube selection isn’t that great…so here are a few just to give you a taste.
Don’t forget to watch Survivor tonight as my girl Alexis continues her run as a reality TV star.
Oh..and Lost. Don’t forget Freckles.
Mucho take it easy.
