Evil Urges, the new album coming from My Morning Jacket, will be released on June 10th on ATO Records.
It’s bad bass.
I’m no longer calling these “music reviews,” because everything I’ve reviewed for brahsome.com I have loved, so really they’re “music suggestions.” I just don’t feel the need to “review” something I don’t like. Why write a story about how shitty an album is? That’s just, like, my opinion, man.
So, today’s Music Suggestion is to call in sick on June 10, grab a couple of sixers of your favorite brew and sit on your back porch and rock out.
At various points throughout the album, it sounds like Jim James, Prince and Lionel Richie had a love child. . .and it squirted out of the womb in a purple velvet leisure suit with a jheri curl. We start out with the title track and run through 14 songs where their rock and roll roots are drenched in soul, funk and a little R&B flavor. Rather than bring us another great rock album, which we all knew they could do, the band decided to throw us a curve ball. And they nailed it.
Being MMJ, there are still plenty of guitar riffs and some of that good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll that we’ve come to expect from them. And there are a few moments where James gets a little tender on us (Librarian*). . .but this album is just further proof that you can’t pigeon hole them as a ’southern rock’ band, as a few have tried to do. That’s just lazy. These cats have one of the best bands going right now, and bringing out an album like Evil Urges just proves it.
Well played, boys.
Here are a few youtubes of the new stuff. Sound quality isn’t great on all of them, but it’s worth it to get a taste.

Touch Me I’m Going to Scream
*The use of “innerweb” in this song made me love this album, band, and mainly Jim James forever.

OOHHH YES!! I’ve been waiting for them to release their next album for a while now. I’ll definitely be rocking out in my backyard with some DFH 60 or 90min (or maybe a few hopslams I squirreled away) and some solar-puffin on June 10th (unless Big T rips a copy of it in the next few weeks/already downloaded it)..Although, I doubt I’ll be skipping any work to do so.
Kyle-I’ll let you know if Tom already has their new album and burn you a copy…that is–if you make it back from bald head this weekend!
