Raleigh Native and Broughton graduate, Webb Simpson, earned his PGA Tour Card yesterday by grinding out the six grueling rounds of Q School in La Quinta, California. Simpson, a may graduate of Wake Forest where he attended on the prestigious Arnold Palmer Scholarship, played his best golf in the last round, firing a five under to tie for seventh. Top 25 and ties earned their 2009 Tour Card. After finishing at Wake, Simpson turned professional leaving the amateur ranks as number one in the world according to some publications. In only eight starts on the Nationwide Tour, he earned $149,000 to put him in 45th place on the money list and bypass the first three rounds of Q School. Not a bad haul for two months worth of work.
Now begins the real journey, playing and staying on Tour, something Simpson has been working towards since he was a young boy dominating grown men on his home course, Carolina Country Club. His card is good for one year and he must stay in the top 125 on PGA money list, or it’s back to Q School. I’ve mentioned on this blahg before, but speaking from personal knowledge, this could not have happened to a more well deserving guy. He is humble, hard working and a genuinely nice guy. Those are pretty rare characteristics for a superstar athlete in today’s world.
In related news, High Points’ Drew Weaver was no where to be found in the Q School final stage and probably slinging biscuits at the Biscuit Factory back home.
***Update- ESPN ranked Simpson as one of only two Five Star players who earned their card at Q School.

you two are cute together.
Piler, Low blow to Willow Creek’s finest. He’s always been a late bloomer.
So, Webb played well at the Masters last year, right?
I can smell the rivalry…..
PGA Tour Card > Playing in the Masters Once as an amateur and earning $0.
Webb will play in many Masters in his lifetime. Maybe he’ll let Drew touch is tour card one day.
