West Virginia 31, UNC-CH 30

by The Piler on December 28, 2008

On a day when Hakeem Nicks couldn’t be stopped, The Moutaineers found a way to stop his Tarheel team. The first quarter looked liked something straight off of Xbox 360, with quick-strike score after quick-strike score. UNC has made it’s living all season off of turnovers and big plays. Today, their opponents just made a few more when it counted. The above youtube perfectly sums up the Heels’ frustrations, or maybe its the realization that a below average game day coach is hijacking millions from your school based on mediocre results.

Things do not bode well for UNC’s offensive future, with their presumed ‘09 playmakers committing big blunders when the chips were down today. Greg Little let a potential touchdown pass slip right through his hands, forcing the Heels to punt. Apparently, it wasn’t just the vasoline, as Shaun Draughn had a critical fumble late in the game. Finally, TJ Yates iced the game for the ‘Neers with an interception. This is all assuming, of course, Nicks goes pro after this season. After today’s performance he’d be crazy not to. 200+ yards and 3 TDs? That probably made several hundred thousand dollars today alone. Not to mention he watched his teammate, Brandon Tate, go down with an ACL and cost himself potential millions this year.

As impressive as Nicks was today, Pat White was every bit as good. He came into the game with a runner’s rep, and the all time NCAA QB rushing record, but put on a show with his arm. He topped 300 passing yards for the first time in his career and made several very impressive throws, threading the needle on multiple throws to his receivers. I didn’t think he had a chance to get drafted as QB, but he showed a lot of potential today. If nothing else, he’d be deadly in the suddenly chic Wildcat Offense.

His coach gave him high praise in his post game interview, proclaiming he hopes his son is like Pat White. I don’t know about you Bill, but I personally hope my sons can speak coherent English after four years of college, but whatevs. Regardless of White’s slaying of the King’s English, the kid is a heck of a football player.
