Not In My House

by The Piler on February 2, 2009

UNC’s Mike Copeland went up for a dunk, seen above, during garbage time of Saturday’s State-Carolina matchup and got hammered by Wolfpack center Ben McCauley. Copeland is a bench warmer and was in the game for mop-up duty, so there is a legitimate debate as to whether he should have been trying to score with two seconds left up by 15. I personally don’t have a problem with the kid trying to score. Presumably, he works his butt off in practice with little playing time in return, so he’s got to get his when he can. I am also of the school of thought that says if you don’t like some scoring play defense and stop it yourself. However, he has to know he’s getting hammered in that situation- in your biggest rival’s gym during a blowout win. McCauley yelled at Copeland during the skirmish “Not in my house!”

Frankly, I would have been pissed had McCauley not done that and I basically did the same thing in a rec-league game two weeks ago, except it was two six foot white doods with nothing close to a dunk going down. It’s just a pride thing. The problem with this situation was Copeland’s reaction. Yes, the foul was hard, but that’s the risk you run when you try to score in that situation. You just have to hop up and shoot your free throws. I’m sure Roy will make him pay for it dearly in practice this week.

Yeah, Roy will probably make him clean the tanning bed he keeps in the coaches offices…or maybe he’ll have to assist Roy’s hair and make-up teams.

At least Roy had the refs kick him out… Lowe wouldn’t have done that. He only pulls out players when they’re on a hot streak and shouldn’t be taken out of the game… i.e. Fells when he was knocking threes. And why does he call time out right before the TV timeout?!? I mean, are the players THAT out of shape that they need extra rest?

Fells asked to come out of the game, but thanks for playing, Murcock.
