Prom '09

It’s that time of year, folks, rented tuxes, corsages, sweaty palms and young brahs taking that first plunge into minute-mandom. Yes, it’s prom season. Down at West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC a prom-goer got real nice at the barbershop to put that extra bit of panache on his big night. Maybe he was inspired by Ron Artest’s recent attempts to bring the Anthony Mason look. I remember the first time I saw a guy with the shaved design look, when Maurice transferred to my elementary school from New York. His go to was the New York sky line, working in the Nike Air logo from time to time. He really it mixed up, rocking dreads up top, into the fade design. He also brought condoms to school in fifth grade and gave one to a buddy.   Maurice may have been plowing during nap-time in kindergarten, but we were 12 year old Raleigh white boys, so we did the only natural thing to do with a condom. We filled it up with water, to double the size of a watermelon and tried to take it outside. It busted before we got out the door, flooding my buddy’s kitchen. Not sure how I got from prom ‘09 to condom water balloons, but I did.  Safe sex at prom ‘09- now we’ve come full circle.
